Communications Committee to examine postcode concerns

4 Samh 2014, 12:55

Representatives from the Freight Transport Association of Ireland will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to discuss their concerns in relation to the proposed Eircode postcode system.

4 November 2014

Next year, a new postcode system for Ireland will be implemented, which has been described as a smart location code enabling every residential and business address to be located. At tomorrow’s meeting, representatives from the Freight Transport Association of Ireland are expected to outline what they perceive as the flaws in the proposed system.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says:  “A new smart postcode system for Ireland is expected to be launched early next year. With Ireland being one of the few developed countries without a postcode system, there is a clear rationale for the introduction of a national postcode system. While key stakeholders such as the Freight Transport Association welcomed the idea in principle, a number of issues have now emerged as Eircode approaches the implementation phase. Tomorrow, Committee Members will have an opportunity to explore the concerns of the Freight Transport Association officials, who represent Irish freight and logistics industry.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 5 November  at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
