Foreign Affairs Committee to meet with Nigerian Ambassador

4 Samh 2014, 10:04

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade will tomorrow meet with newly appointed Ambassador of Nigeria to Ireland Dr Bolere Elizabeth Ketebu to consider issues of mutual interest between both countries.

3 November 2014

The meeting will focus on the further development of trade between the two countries, the containment of Ebola in Nigeria and an update on Boko Haram.

Vice-Chairman of the Committee Bernard Durkan TD says: \"We look forward to meeting with newly appointed Ambassador Dr Ketebu at tomorrow’s meeting, which will include discussion of the very welcome containment of the Ebola virus by the authorities in Nigeria. As a Committee, we met Ambassador Ketebu’s predecessor in May and we look forward to hearing an update the activities of Boko Haram and specifically the efforts being made to bring about the safe release of the school girls kidnapped six months ago.

“The meeting will also consider the opportunities for increasing trade between Ireland and Nigeria. We intend to discuss Nigeria’s emergence as a major regional economic player, with 2013 GDP data indicating that the country is now Africa’s largest economy. The discussion with Ambassador Ketebu is expected to consider the opportunities for Irish business to tap into the opportunities presented in this fast-growing market of 180 million people.”

The meeting commences tomorrow Tuesday 4 November at 12 noon in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. The meeting will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV (UPC 207 and Sky 574) and can also be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
