Transport Committee to meet RSA Chair Designate Liz O’Donnell

10 Samh 2014, 17:04

The Chairperson Designate of the Road Safety Authority Liz O’Donnell will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow at 12 noon.

10 November 2014

The RSA works to improve road safety in Ireland through educational campaigns, vehicle testing, oversight of driver instruction and driver licencing and in undertaking research to improve road safety.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The meeting with Liz O’Donnell tomorrow will afford Committee Members the opportunity to engage with her on where she sees the priorities for future road safety measures. A former TD and Minister of State, Ms O’Donnell would replace Gay Byrne if successfully appointed Chair to this high profile body.”

“The RSA was established in 2006 as a State Agency to promote and support all aspects of road safety and has been at the vanguard of wide-ranging initiatives to reduce deaths on Irish roads. RSA-supported improvements in education, enforcement and engineering have had a hugely positive effect in bringing down the number of road accidents. However, one death on the roads is a death too many, and the 2013 increase in road deaths are a stark reminder of the dangers of complacency. Tomorrow’s meeting will be a valuable opportunity to discuss with Ms O’Donnell what further steps might be taken to help reduce the carnage on our roads.

“The Committee does not have a blocking role in the appointment and following the discussion tomorrow, decisions will be taken by the Minister or the Government, as appropriate, to confirm Ms O’Donnell as chairperson.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 11 November in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 at 12 noon. Public proceedings will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV (UPC 207 and Sky 574) and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
