Oireachtas Hill Walk Committee presents proceeds to CARI

11 Samh 2014, 14:26

A number of TDs and Senators have presented the proceeds of the Annual Oireachtas Hill Walk to representatives of CARI at an event in Leinster House this afternoon.

11 November 2014

It follows their participation in a successful 2014 Oireachtas hill walk, which took place in late June in the Macgillycuddy Reeks.

This year’s event raised almost €2,500 for the charity, which has helped thousands of children and families deal with, respond to and recover from the trauma of child sexual abuse over 25 years.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD is chair of the cross-party hillwalking group, which also comprises Deputies Eric Byrne TD and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD and Senator Catherine Noone.

Deputy Deenihan says: “On Sunday 29 June, Oireachtas Members, staff and friends took in the stunning views of the Macgillycuddy Reeks during a variety of hikes for all abilities. A number of the more challenging hikes took groups to the summit of Ireland’s highest peak Carrauntoohil. This year’s event was organised to raise funds for CARI, the only national voluntary organisation providing specialised therapy and support to children, families and groups affected by child sexual abuse.”

“I wish to thank hikers and sponsors for all their efforts in raising money for a most worthy cause. I acknowledge too the help of the CEO of Mountaineering Ireland Karl Boyle and the volunteers who led the groups so adeptly through the distinctive and challenging Kerry landscape. I also wish to thank long-standing participants in the all-party Oireachtas Hill Walk Committee, Deputies Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD and Eric Byrne TD.”

To date the Oireachtas Walk has raised over €20,000 for worthy causes.

Photos from the presentation this afternoon are accessible via the Oireachtas Facebook page.
