Good Friday Committee to travel to Warrenpoint and Newry to assess Narrow Water bridge progress

12 Samh 2014, 18:43

The delegation from the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will tomorrow (Thursday 13 November) travel to the site of the Narrow Water bridge and nearby towns to assess progress in the delivery of a crucial piece of infrastructure for the border region.

12 November 2014

Committee Members will meet with members and officials from Louth County Council, Newry and Mourne District Council, Down local authorities and the East Border Region. The delegation will also hear from local business representatives from both sides of the border on the economic imperative for the project. (see agenda below)

Committee Chairman Frank Feighan TD says: “There is longstanding, unanimous support among Committee Members for the Narrow Water bridge project and look forward to meeting local authority members and officials as well as business leaders tomorrow.  Through our many meetings on the issue, we are acutely aware that fully that delivery of this project is fundamentally about people, and not politics. With 3.1 million people living within one hour of the North Louth/South Down region, the tourism potential of such a connection between the Mournes and the Cooleys will no doubt be emphasised. It will be an opportunity to meet first hand with many local leaders who have been to the forefront of a campaign for the bridge which precedes the peace process.”
