Justice Committee to discuss ‘problem drinking’ with VFI and NOffLA

18 Samh 2014, 16:39

The issue of ‘problem drinking’ from a public order perspective will be on the agenda of the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow, Wednesday, 19th November 2014 when it meets with representatives from the National Off-Licence Association and Vintners Federation of Ireland.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “The health-related consequences from problem drinking and the excessive use of alcohol have been well-documented. But problem drinking has wider societal problems in terms of public order, such as public drunkenness, vandalism, domestic violence, crime, anti-social behaviour and accidents. Tomorrow, we will conduct a more in-depth analysis of the issue when we meet with the VFI and NOffLA. It’s an opportunity for members to discuss the adverse consequences of excessive alcohol use from a public order perspective and consider how we can adopt a balanced but effective approach to dealing with the problem.”

This meeting will start at 10am on Wednesday, 19th November 2014 in Committee Room 2. Following the meeting with VFI and NOffLA, the Committee will consider a motion on a proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a European Union agency for law enforcement training (CEPOL).

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
