Finance Committee to discuss mortgage insurance schemes

26 Samh 2014, 14:51

Mortgage Insurance Schemes will be on the agenda of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform at its meeting

The schedule for the meeting is:

Session A: 10 am.
Representatives from Arch Mortgage Insurance; Genworth Mortgage Insurance Europe; and JLT Insurance Brokers Ltd.
Session B: 2 pm.
Brendan Burgess, AskAboutmoney.com; Karl Deeter, Irish Mortgage Brokers; Paul Joyce, Senior Policy Researcher, FLAC; Dr Ronan Lyons, Economist, Trinity College Dublin; and Ross Maguire, Senior Counsel, New Beginning.

Committee Chairman Dr Liam Twomey TD said: “The proposed Central Bank rules relating to mortgage deposits have attracted a lot of attention, with some concerns that it may make it difficult for many people to buy a house. Mortgage insurance schemes have been used in some countries to enable borrowers to obtain finance for housing without actually having to save the full amount that would otherwise have been insisted upon by the lenders and their regulators. Given the Central Bank proposals, it is timely that we should consider the issue of mortgage insurance schemes and how they could be applied to Ireland. Tomorrow we will discuss the issue from a consumer and industry perspective.”

This meeting will start at 10am on Thursday, 27th November 2014 in Committee Room 3.
