EU Affairs Committee to consider EU Investment Package and Annual Growth Survey 2015

3 Noll 2014, 14:27

Senior European Commission representatives will appear before Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs tomorrow to consider the recently launched EU Investment Package and the results of the Annual Growth Survey 2015.

3 December 2014

Barbara Nolan, Head of the European Commission Representation in Dublin, will address the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan says: “Tomorrow’s meeting will be a valuable opportunity to explore two distinct strands of the European Commission’s work, which have significant implications for Ireland. The recently announced Investment Plan for Europe is designed as a package of measures to unlock public and private investments in the real economy of at least €315 billion from 2015 to 2017.  About 1,000 potential investment opportunities have been identified, with a particular emphasis on the peripheral economies, so Committee Members will be keen to explore how communities across Ireland  might benefit from the package.”

The meeting will also consider the Annual Growth Survey 2015 with Ms Nolan and Patrick O’Riordan, who is European Semester Officer at the Commission Representation in Dublin.

Deputy Hannigan continues: “EU countries, and particularly euro area countries, are no longer able to formulate and conduct their economic policy in complete isolation from other EU countries. The adoption of the Annual Growth Survey kicks off this so-called European Semester of economic and budgetary policy coordination. The creation of this real economic union presents both opportunities and challenges for national parliaments and parliamentarians and we look forward to engaging with Mr O’Riordan on the key features of the 2015 survey and the implications for Ireland.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 4 December at 2pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be followed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
