Good Friday Committee to consider cross border palliative care initiatives

10 Noll 2014, 14:10

The work of the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care will be discussed by the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement tomorrow.

10 December 2014

Committee Members will meet with Karen Charnley, who manages the Education and Communication Hub at the Institute. The All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) was formally established in October 2010, and the 17 Member organisations involved reflect a broad range of expertise in the service delivery, academic preparation for and management of hospice and palliative care across the island of Ireland.

Chairman of the Committee Frank Feighan TD says: “All-island, cross border cooperation in key, strategic areas makes sense, especially as both parts of the island are dealing with the aftermath and demands of the financial crisis. In the area of health, this is particularly true as illness does not recognise borders and our response to illness should not either. The AIIHPC is a practical example of expertise from both sides of the border being harnessed to deliver a better experience for patients and their families.”

In October, Deputy Feighan helped launch a new state-of-the-art website from the AIIHPC, which seeks to assist parents, guardians, carers and the wider public in understanding what children’s palliative care is and helps filter the wide range of information available on the internet.

Deputy Feighan continues: “As well as focussing on the Institute’s wider work, Committee Members will be keen to explore with Ms Charnley the new palliative care hub www.cypph.com, which provides an indispensable resource across the island. It would be impossible to underestimate the importance of shared experiences and collective learning in this area – from the comfort of knowing that you are not alone to the sharing of practical information on services available on both sides of the border. This valuable work very much ties in with the priorities of this Committee in supporting all practical forms of cross border cooperation.”

The meeting takes place at 10:15 am tomorrow Thursday 11 December in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
