Transport Committee to consider 2014 performance of Irish tourism industry

16 Noll 2014, 10:29

Hotel and drinks industry representatives will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to consider the performance of the Irish tourist industry this year, and discuss the outlook for 2015.

16 December 2014

The Irish Hotels Federation will be represented by President Stephen McNally and CEO Tim Fenn, while Secretary Donall O'Keeffe and Board Member Padraig Cribben will offer the perspective of Drinks Industry Group Ireland (DIGI).

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tourism is an important indigenous industry, employing thousands of people around the country in rural and urban areas. After four difficult years, Irish tourism experienced an upturn in fortunes in 2013, with the ‘Gathering’ making a significant contribution to an increase in numbers from most markets. Initiatives in 2014, such as the opening of the Wild Atlantic Way, are building on the gains of last year. Further growth in tourism would bring major economic benefits and help to sustain and create jobs in every corner of the country. We look forward to engaging with hotel and drinks industry representatives on what has been a broadly successful 2014, and what targeted efforts might be made next year.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 17 December at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be followed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
