Good Friday Committee to meet cross-border theatre group

14 Ean 2015, 13:07

The cross border projects of the Smashing Times Theatre Company will be discussed by the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement tomorrow.

14 January 2015

The Dublin-based theatre company, established in 1991, and is involved in professional performance, training and participation, with a strong social and rights-based dimension.

Chairman of the Committee Frank Feighan TD says: “As a Committee, we are acutely aware of the role the positive role arts and culture can play in enhancing reconciliation. Last year, through a formal meeting in Leinster House and a visit to community groups in Derry, we explored how music and theatre is breaking down barriers between the two communities in Northern Ireland.

“Tomorrow’s meeting will discuss initiatives such as the Memory Project, an initiative which uses drama and theatre to promote peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the border counties. Running throughout 2013 and 2014, the Project included storytelling, workshops and dramatic performances. It is a valuable opportunity for our Committee to explore how this and other Projects have contributed to mutual understanding and how these enlightened initiatives of Smashing Times can be supported into the future.”

The meeting takes place at 10:15 am tomorrow Thursday 15 January in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
