Finance Committee to consider key EU initiatives with Department Officials

20 Ean 2015, 16:29

The financial aspects of the EU’s Annual Growth Survey 2015, the Alert Mechanism Report 2015 and An Investment Plan for Europe will be considered by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform tomorrow afternoon. Department of Finance officials will be appearing before the Committee at 4:15 pm.

20 January 2014

The Annual Growth Survey analyses the progress that the EU has made towards its long-term, strategic priorities, while the Alert Mechanism Report is an early warning report to detect and address economic trends or imbalances that could prove harmful to individual Member States. Separate to these economic surveillance measures, the recently published Investment Plan for Europe has been designed as a package of measures to unlock public and private investments across the EU of at least €315 billion from 2015 to 2017.

Committee Chairman Dr Liam Twomey TD said: “Tomorrow’s meeting will be a valuable opportunity to explore two distinct strands of the European Commission’s work which have significant implications for Ireland, key elements of the European Semester process and the recently announced Investment Plan for Europe.

\"EU countries, and particularly euro area countries, are no longer able to formulate and conduct their economic policy in complete isolation from other EU countries. The creation of this real economic union presents both opportunities and challenges for national parliaments and parliamentarians and we look forward to engaging with Department officials on the key features of the 2015 Survey and Alert Report and the implications for Ireland.”

“Meanwhile, the Investment Plan for Europe identifies 1,000 potential investment opportunities, with a particular emphasis on the so-called peripheral regions, so Committee Members will be keen to explore how communities across Ireland might benefit from the package.”

This session of the meeting tomorrow will commence at 4:15 pm on Wednesday, 21 January in Committee Room 4. It will be preceded by a separate session with Paul Quinn of the Office of Government Procurement (see separate media release).
