The Dáil Select Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will meet tomorrow, Wednesday 28 January, at 4pm for Committee Stage consideration of the Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014. Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD will be in attendance.

The Bill sets out to expand the remit and powers of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “This meeting will allow the Select Committee to consider this important piece of legislation, which provides for additional powers of investigation for GSOC. Minister Fitzgerald has described the legislation as an important element in the comprehensive programme of justice reform that is being undertaken by the Government. As a Committee, we undertook an extensive body of work last year on the present oversight mechanisms detailed in the Garda Síochána Act 2005 and the resulting Review, which we published in October will inform Committee–stage consideration tomorrow.”

This Committee stage consideration will take place at 4pm and will be preceded by a session with Minister for Defence Simon Coveney TD on 2015 Revised Estimates for Public Services.

Commencing at 2:30 pm, the Select Committee will consider Vote 35 (Army Pensions), which amounts to €216 million, and Vote 36 (Defence), which amounts to €639 million.

Both sessions take place in Committee Room 2, LH 2000, and can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
