Oireachtas Health Committee to discuss health issues with Stormont counterparts

9 Feabh 2015, 16:36

A delegation from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children will travel to Stormont on Tuesday (10 February) to meet with the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee on Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

8 February 2015

The delegation is expected to build on previous visits in fostering greater collaboration between both health systems.

Committee Chair Jerry Buttimer TD says: “On behalf of Committee Members, I wish to welcome the decision to meet with Committee counterparts in Stormont to discuss a number of health issues of common concern. Illness does not recognise borders and our response to illness should not either. Among the issues that we hope to discuss at the meeting will be children’s heart surgery, deep brain stimulation treatment and concussion in sport.

“A meeting with the Northern Ireland health committee is an excellent opportunity to discuss key health issues and to identify common concerns. Most of the challenges facing the Irish healthcare system are not unique, particularly in areas such as rising healthcare costs, chronic illness and services for an older population. All healthcare systems face increased demand for services. Collaboration and innovation are key to driving improvements in our health service. Many health professionals North and South are already working together to help patients, and we need to build on this by sharing ideas on an all-island basis.”
