EU Affairs Committee to discuss the Five Presidents’ Report on strengthening economic and monetary union (EMU)

23 MFómh 2015, 11:24

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet tomorrow to discuss the Five Presidents’ Report - Completing Europe’s Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

23rd September 2015

Mr. José Leandro, Principal Adviser, Directorate General Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) will address the Committee.

The five Presidents are European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, together with the President of the Euro Summit, Donald Tusk; the President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem; the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

Their report puts forward their plans on how to deepen the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) as of July 2015 and how to complete it by 2025, at the latest.

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, says: “Despite the great progress that has been made over the years, more needs to be done to secure the long-term stability and future of the Eurozone.”

“The Five Presidents’ Report aims to lay the groundwork for achieving even greater growth, jobs and prosperity across the Eurozone. While respecting national fiscal policies, an enduring system for the governance of the Euro must be achieved and can only be achieved through the commitment and buy-in of all Member States.”

“The Joint Committee looks forward to hearing from Mr. José Leandro as to the detail of the Report, in particular the democratic safeguards to be included and the role of national parliaments’ in the context of deepening European integration.  My Committee formally sent its views on the social dimension of EMU and also on democratic accountability in EMU to the European Commission in two separate communications, in advance of the publication of Report by the Presidents”

The meeting will take place at 2pm in Committee Room 2, tomorrow, Thursday, 24th  September.
