Minister O’Sullivan to address Education Committee on mid-year review of 2015 Estimates

29 MFómh 2015, 17:39

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will meet with the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, TD, tomorrow, Wednesday 30th September, to conduct a mid-year review of Estimates for 2015 for the Department of Education and Skills.

29th September 2015

The Committee will consider Vote 26, which provides for expenditure of approximately €8.58 billion.

In line with a number of other Committees, the meeting will feature an increased emphasis on examining Departmental performance – identifying what public service outputs and outcomes are being delivered for citizens arising from the Department’s activities, and whether the resources are achieving worthwhile results. The Government Programme contained a commitment to strengthen this process, known as performance budgeting, to improve transparency and broaden the role of Oireachtas Committees.

Committee Chair, Joanna Tuffy TD said, “Tomorrow’s meeting is a valuable opportunity for the Committee to engage with the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, on how her Department has performed so far this year, and to discuss other developments in relation to the voted expenditure.”

“The Department has the crucial responsibility of ensuring that the country is equipped with an education and training system that meets the ever-changing needs of students and the economy. The Joint Committee will be assessing the Department’s performance to date in terms of ensuring that the bodies providing education and training all levels are meeting the demand for quality services at all levels in an effective manner.”

The meeting will commence at 1 pm in Committee Room 3.
