Ombudsman, Mr. Peter Tyndall, to present reports to the Oireachtas Oversight Committee

29 MFómh 2015, 15:44

The Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow hear from the Ombudsman, Mr. Peter Tyndall, on the findings of the 2014 Annual Report and also the Investigation report ‘Learning to Get Better’.

29nd September 2015

In presenting the 2014 Annual Report, the Ombudsman will have the opportunity to inform the Committee on a variety of findings and also discuss the recent launch of the ‘Ombudsman’s Casebook’ publication.

The Committee will also discuss the key findings and recommendations of the Investigation report ‘Learning to Get Better’ which examines how public hospitals in Ireland handle complaints about their services.

Chairman of the Committee, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, said “This Committee continues to embrace its formal role in engaging with the Ombudsman and tomorrow’s meeting is another valuable opportunity to discuss with Mr. Tyndall his Office’s newly published annual report and also his Investigation report ‘Learning to Get Better’. I also particularly look forward to hearing the Ombudsman’s opinion on the concept of Legal Professional Privilege and how, if at all, it impacts on his ability to fully carry out the function of his office. This is a matter which has been raised by other Ombudsmen previously and we look forward to exploring this further with Mr. Tyndall.”

“The investigation report ‘Learning to Get Better’ lists 36 recommendations on how the public health service can improve in handling complaints and as a Committee we very much welcome the opportunity to hear from Mr. Tyndall on his findings and recommendations. This goes to the heart of the function of this Committee and allows us to directly consider the delivery of public services.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 30th September at 4 pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.

Public proceedings can be followed live here

The meeting will also be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV on Sky Channel 574; UPC Channel 207 and eVision Channel 504.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
