EU Affairs Committee to continue discussion of the Five Presidents’ Report on EMU

30 MFómh 2015, 12:11

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will convene tomorrow to resume its consideration of the Five Presidents’ Report – Completing Europe’s Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

30th September 2015

Appearing before the Committee will be:

• Professor Gavin Barrett, UCD;
• Mr. Seamus Coffey, Lecturer, UCC.

The five Presidents are European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, together with the President of the Euro Summit, Donald Tusk; the President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem; the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

Their report puts forward their plans on how to deepen the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) as of July 2015 and how to complete it by 2025, at the latest.

Committee Chair, Dominic Hannigan, TD, says: “Over the past number of years, the EU has put in place a range of new governance mechanisms designed to strengthen economic and monetary union (EMU). The Five presidents’ Report is a key part of this process to continue to make the EU more resilient, particularly in the wake of the economic crash.”

“Tomorrow’s meeting follows on from our initial meeting last week to examine the Five Presidents’ Report. Professor Barrett and Mr. Coffey will offer views on the provisions in the report on 'democratic accountability', in the context of further European integration. The role of national Parliaments, including the Houses of the Oireachtas, will also be discussed in that context.”

The meeting will take place at 2pm in Committee Room 2, tomorrow, Thursday, 1st October 2015.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
