Education Committee to Discuss Gaeltacht Schools, Gaelscoileanna and the Support of Maths in Higher Education

6 DFómh 2015, 15:16

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will convene tomorrow to conduct a two part meeting and engage with representatives of An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta and the Irish Mathematics Learning Support Network.

06th October 2015

The meeting will commence at 2.00 pm in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Wednesday, 7th October 2015.

Mr. Dónal Ó hAiniféin, Chairperson Designate of An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta (COGG), will firstly engage with the Committee on the particular needs of Gaeltacht schools and of Gaelscoileanna at both primary and post-primary levels, and how those needs are being met. The second part of the meeting will see Mr Ciaran O'Sullivan present the findings of the Irish Mathematics Learning Support Network’s (IMLSN) recent survey of students in relation to Mathematics Learning Support.

Committee Chair, Joanna Tuffy TD said, “This meeting is an excellent reflection of the Committee’s wide remit, particularly in the area of Education. Our meeting with Mr Ó hAiniféin will allow us to hear about the variety of issues that face Gaeltacht schools and Gaelscoileanna, especially in a time where demographic, linguistic and other challenges continue to evolve.”

“We will then have the chance to hear from Mr. O’Sullivan on the IMLSN’s report ‘Student Evaluation of Mathematics Learning Support: Insights from a large scale multi-institutional survey’.  The survey contains valuable insights about the transition from second to third level mathematics for students across a range of disciplines and the impact of mathematics support services. Given the importance of mathematics and related subjects to equipping students for the employment opportunities emerging in our developing economy, the survey is particularly relevant at this time.
