The Dáil Select Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will meet tomorrow afternoon for Committee Stage consideration of the Garda Síochána (Policing Authority and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2015.

Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, will be in attendance.
The Garda Síochána (Policing Authority and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2015 provides for the establishment of the new independent Policing Authority to oversee the performance of the policing functions of the Garda Síochána.
The Authority will have extensive functions, many of which are currently exercised by the Government or the Minister for Justice and Equality.
In particular these functions will be concerned with overseeing the governance, structures and performance of the Garda Síochána in the policing area.
Committee Chairman, David Stanton TD, says: “As Chairman of the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality, I very much welcome this piece of legislation. Our Committee has been active in working towards ensuring that reform of An Garda Síochána’s oversight mechanisms is implemented as a matter of utmost importance.”
“In autumn of last year, we published a report recommending the establishment of an Independent Policing Authority. Our Committee hopes that this Bill will contribute towards further justice reform and will increase transparency and accountability within An Garda Síochána.”
