Health Committee to conduct Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of Adoption Bill

7 DFómh 2015, 13:28

Separately, Committee to consider challenges facing the Dental Council of Ireland.

7th October 2015

The Joint Committee on Health and Children will convene tomorrow to begin its Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Adoption (Informative and Tracing) Bill 2015.

The new legislation will provide a statutory basis for the provision of information related to adoption. Officials from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs will attend the initial session to outline the Heads of the Bill.

Prior to this session, the Committee will meet with Dr. Eamon Croke, President of the Dental Council of Ireland, to discuss a number of challenges in relation to dental regulation.

The schedule for the meeting is:

Session A: 9.30 a.m.

The challenges in relation to dental regulation [Dr. Eamon Croke, President, Dental Council of Ireland].

Session B: 11.15 a.m.

Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill 2015 [Officials from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs].

Committee Chair, Jerry Buttimer TD says: “Committee members are very pleased to commence Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill 2015. This is an important piece of legislation that aims to give a statutory right to information about identity for adopted people, in particular the right to access an original Birth Certificate. We held a meeting last year with stakeholders in order to consider the many issues facing adopted people and their families.”

“Tomorrow we will also hear from the President of the Dental Council of Ireland. Dr. Croke will brief us on a number of concerns, raised by the Committee, in relation to dental regulation.  Members will wish to hear from Dr. Croke about the steps being taken by the Dental Council to ensure that all dental staff are properly registered; the rise of corporate dentistry and the impact of this on the industry as a whole, as well as training and indemnity.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 2, LH 2000, at 9.30am tomorrow, Thursday 8th October 2015.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
