15 July 2016

The Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and Defence, Brendan Smith TD, has expressed his sincere condolences in the wake of the tragic events in Nice yesterday.

Deputy Smith has today written to the French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Jean-Pierre Thébault in which he offered his heartfelt condolences to the French people affected by this tragic event. He also expressed solidarity with the families and friends of those affected.

Brendan Smith TD said: ‘The scale of the loss of life in Nice is deeply shocking and upsetting. At a time when people enjoyed the annual Bastille Day celebrations they were visited by unimaginable terror and I offer my sincere sympathy and condolences in this difficult time.\"

\"The bonds of friendship between Ireland and France stretch back hundreds of years, and were most recently strengthened by the very warm welcome received by Irish football fans in France this summer.\"

\"We stand in solidarity with the people of France at this difficult time, and those affected by this appalling act of violence are in our thoughts and prayers.\"
