Minister for Justice & Equality to appear before Justice & Equality Committee

The Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will tomorrow, Wednesday, 5th October 2016, meet with the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice & Equality Frances Fitzgerald T.D.

The schedule for the meeting is:

(i) Mid-Year Review of Estimates for Public Services for the Justice and Equality vote group;
(ii) Briefing on the recent UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants;
(iii) Motion re Proposal for a Council Regulation on jurisdiction, the recognition and enforcement of decisions in matrimonial matters and the matters of parental responsibility, and on international child abduction (recast); and
(iv) Motion re Appointment of Member to the Legal Services Regulatory Authority

Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said: “As well as considering the mid-year review of her Department's estimates, we will also engage with the Minister on the recent UN Summit on refugees and migrants. The refugee crisis is one of the most serious issues facing the world today, with all developed countries having a role and responsibility in providing assistance to save lives and finding long-term solutions. Fifty-two countries and international organizations participated in the recent Summit in New York, with Ireland being represented by Minister Fitzgerald. At tomorrow’s meeting, we will receive a briefing from the Minister on the Summit and it will be an opportunity for Members to discuss with the Minister the efforts by Ireland and the international community to provide adequate support, protection and solutions for refugees. The Joint Committee will also consider two motions which have been referred by both Houses of the Oireachtas.”

The meeting will start at 9am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 5 October 2016.
