Foreign Affairs Committees to discuss European Cooperation projects and the freedom of the press in Turkey

The Joint Committee and Dáil Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence will meet tomorrow to consider matters under their remit. The Select Committee will meet with the Minister of State with special responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe TD, to consider motions regarding Ireland’s participation in two European Defence Agency Projects.

The Joint Committee will then meet with representatives of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) to consider the threat to media freedom in Turkey and the work of the International Federation of Journalists.

The Select Committee meeting will commence at 10.00am in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Thursday, 3 November 2016 and the Joint Committee meeting will commence at 11.45am.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Smith TD, said “Our Select Committee meeting will allow us to consider motions on Ireland’s participation in both the Maritime Surveillance project (MARSUR) and the cooperation project on cyber ranges in the European Union with Minister of State Paul Kehoe TD.”

“Our Joint Committee meeting will then provide a forum for a roundtable discussion on the freedom of the press in Turkey, specifically, with the representatives of the NUJ. The Committee will also hear an update on the work of the International Federation of Journalists in tackling global abuse of media freedom.”
