Budgetary Oversight Committee to meet with the Chairman of the National Competitiveness Council

The Committee on Budgetary Oversight will tomorrow meet with Professor Peter Clinch, Chairman of the National Competitiveness Council to examine competitiveness issues and economic growth.

The meeting will commence at 4.00pm in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 February 2017.

Committee Chairman, John Paul Phelan TD, said “Competitiveness in an economy is key to ensuring sustainability and growth. Traditionally, Ireland performs well across key indicators such as infrastructure, education & training, market efficiency and indeed our international ranking has seen recovery recently, seeing us place 23rd in terms of global competitiveness.”

“We very much welcome the opportunity to hear from Professor Clinch tomorrow, as Chairman of the National Competitiveness Council, where we will look to discuss the key competitiveness issues facing the Irish economy and how this can feed into our report on the revised capital plan as well as Budget 2018. Members will look to examine the factors driving the recovery in our global rankings, where the opportunities for growth lie and the importance of our ranking in a European and global context. As the body that put forward policy recommendations on enhancing Ireland’s competitive position, this is a key meeting in terms our own body of work.”
