Health Committee to discuss issues surrounding the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Joint Committee on Health will tomorrow meet to discuss issues in relation to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its relevance for health and wellbeing. The Committee will hear from representatives from Mental Health Reform, Inclusion Ireland, the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies and The Not for Profit Business Association.

The meeting will commence at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 17 May 2017.

Committee Chairman Dr. Michael Harty TD said “The ongoing issues surrounding Ireland’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) have been highlighted at length, without the required action being taken to benefit the estimated 600,000 people in Ireland living with a disability. Tomorrow, we will meet with those on the frontline of representing and promoting disability services, and service users, in Ireland that have advocated for ratification since the UNCRPD was signed in 2007.”

“Members will have the opportunity to hear what ratification would mean to those living with disabilities, in a practical sense, and discuss more broadly the current issues facing the disability community in Ireland.”
