On Wednesday, March 27, the Joint Committee on Justice and Equality will conduct detailed scrutiny of a Private Member’s Bill that proposes to preclude people from benefiting from homicides they commit.
The Committee will hear from Jim O’Callaghan TD, sponsor of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017.
Other scheduled witnesses include
- UCC Law Professor John Mee
- Representatives of AdVIC, the advocacy group for victims of homicide
“The Private Member’s Bill seeks to amend the Civil Liability Act 1961 by inserting a new Part into that Act. The new Part would set out a statutory mechanism that would have the effect of prohibiting people from inheriting assets from the estate of persons whom they have killed,” said Committee Chairman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD.
