PAC to hear from Garda Commissioner on An Garda Síochána accounts

8 Beal 2019, 15:42

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will meet tomorrow to consider the following matters relating to An Garda Síochána:

Appropriation Accounts 2017 Vote 20 - An Garda Síochána;

Report on the Accounts of the Public Services 2017 Chapter 7 - Management of overtime expenditure in An Garda Síochána.

Commissioner Drew Harris and representatives from An Garda Síochána will appear before the Committee.

Chairman of the PAC, Seán Fleming TD, said today, “Total gross expenditure by An Garda Síochána amounted to €1.7 billion in 2017. The Committee will wish to discuss a number of issues, including procurement practices and matters relating to fixed charge notices.”

“The final overtime spend in 2017 was €132 million, almost 50% higher than the estimate provision. Overtime expenditure exceeded the estimate provisions in each of the five years to 2017. The C&AG’s examination found that management practices to control the overtime budget in 2017 were ineffective and Committee Members will have questions around staff resources and potential efficiencies.”

The meeting will start at 9am in Committee Room 3
