Education Committee to discuss proposed legislation on redress bodies' records

25 Samh 2019, 12:35

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills will discuss the Retention of Records Bill 2019 at a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, in Leinster House, Committee room 4 at 11am.

The Committee of TDs and Senators will hear from some of those who may be impacted by or have a professional view on the Bill before it commences formal consideration of the proposed legislation.

The Bill provides for records from the work of Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (Cica), the Residential Institutions Redress Board, and the Residential Institutions Redress Review Committee to be in the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) and sealed for a minimum of 75 years.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee chair, Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin said: “The purpose of our meeting is to consider the provisions of the Bill as they relate to records associated with these events and to give members an insight into the concerns stakeholders may have regarding the Bill.

“This insight will allow members to take account of those concerns in their preparation for formal consideration of the Bill.”
