Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs to hear from Scouting Ireland

3 Noll 2019, 16:15

Scouting Ireland representatives will appear before the Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs tomorrow, Wednesday, in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 10am.

The organisation is before the Committee of TDs and Senators to discuss governance issues in Scouting Ireland.

Speaking in advance on the meeting, Committee Chairman Alan Farrell TD said: “Alleged historical abuse cases in Scouting Ireland legacy organisations have rocked confidence in scouting. How Scouting Ireland is handling this crisis and current governance and safeguarding practises in the organisation are of ongoing focus and concern.

“We want to get an update on the progress Scouting Ireland is making in terms of improving governance and ensuring it is adhering to child protection legislation.”

“It is vital that parents and guardians can have confidence in the protection being offered to their children by an organisation like Scouting Ireland. The Committee is eager to hear from Scouting Ireland with regard to the work they are undertaking to ensure their safeguarding processes are robust and to rebuild public confidence in the organisation.”
