The Joint Committee on Health will get an update on the progress being made on the new national children’s hospital at a meeting in Leinster House tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 November at 11.30am.

The Joint Committee will hear from representatives of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) and Children’s Health Ireland.

The witnesses who are scheduled to appear, remotely are, David Gunning, Chief Officer, NPHDB; Phelim Devine, Project Director, Accounting Officer, NPHDB; Eilish Hardiman, CEO, Children’s Health Ireland; and Dr Ciara Martin, Clinical Director and Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Children’s Health Ireland.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee chairman Seán Crowe TD said: “Committee members want to know when the new National Children’s Hospital, beside St James’s Hospital will open. The project has already overrun the predicted budget and was behind schedule before the pandemic began. The hospital was scheduled to be finished and handed over to the State by 2023 but the Committee was recently told there are ‘significant challenges’ associated with meeting the 2023 timeline.

“The Committee is looking forward to this engagement, to get crucial answers on the hospital including the current estimated cost of the project and to find out when children, who need care, will be able to access that care at the long-awaited new hospital.”

The meeting is taking place in Committee Room three with witnesses appearing remotely.
