The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will discuss the Irish language and the New Decade New Approach Agreement with officials from Conradh na Gaeilge at a meeting in Leinster House, tomorrow, Tuesday, 2 March at 10am.

Conradh na Gailege’s Dr Niall Comer, Uachtarán; Julian de Spáinn, Ard Rúnaí ;Conchúr Ó Muadaigh and Dr Pádraig Ó Tiarnaigh will appear before the Committee.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman Fergus O’Dowd TD said: “Conradh na Gaeilge promotes the Irish language not only in Ireland but worldwide. This is a timely engagement with the organisation as it coincides with the annual international festival promoting the Irish language and culture Seachtain na Gaeilge which runs until 17 March.

“The meeting will focus on proposals for the Irish language in the New Decade, New Approach agreement which was published in January 2020.  Members want to hear updates and get the view of Conradh na Gaeilge on a number of issues connected with the Irish language in the agreement including legislating for official recognition of the Irish language, and an Irish Language Commissioner to set best practice standards for public authorities in Northern Ireland.”

The meeting is taking place in Committee Room 2.
