Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks to discuss eScooters as part of Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of Road Traffic Bill

26 Aib 2021, 12:56

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks will meet tomorrow at 12.30pm with eScooters among the topics for consideration as part of the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of Road Traffic Bill.

Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the general scheme of the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2019 will take place when witnesses from Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the National Transport Authority (NTA) appear. Scrutiny of the Bill began last month when the RSA appeared.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Kieran O’Donnell TD said: “Tuesday’s meeting is an opportunity to get the view of the National Transport Authority on a range of very relevant matters which impact on all transport users and pedestrians, from eScooters to eBikes and more.

“Furthermore, we look forward to the input of Transport Infrastructure Ireland concerning road traffic safety, and the broader infrastructural update for the committee. Significant work has been carried out throughout the pandemic on our road networks, and we’ve seen specific upgrades to infrastructure for cyclists in urban areas. It is important that infrastructural improvements are evident in urban and rural Ireland. In addition, we will discuss variable speed limits on motorways across Ireland, and lane and carriageway use on motorways.”

Tomorrows meeting will take place in Committee Room 3, watch live.
