Seanad Committee to discuss Citizens’ Rights in Northern Ireland post Brexit

24 Beal 2021, 15:05

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union will meet this afternoon with representatives to discuss Citizens’ Rights in Northern Ireland following the UK’s exit from the EU.

The Committee of Senators will meet at 3 pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House with:

  • Daniel Holder, Deputy Director, Committee on the Administration of Justice
  • Les Allamby, Chief Commissioner, Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission
  • Sinéad Gibney, Chief Commissioner, Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission
  • Geraldine McGahey, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland

Speaking ahead of Monday’s meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Lisa Chambers said: “The Committee and I welcome today’s representatives from the Committee on the Administration of Justice, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and the Equality Commission of Northern Ireland. I look forward to getting their perspective on citizens’ rights in Northern Ireland and if anything has changed post-Brexit, or do they foresee challenges ahead.”

Senator Chambers added: “One of the priorities of the Irish Government in its approach to Brexit was to protect citizens' rights north and south of the Border. The Committee and I echo that sentiment and would like today to have a debate about how we can come together in achieving that.”
