27 MFómh 2021, 14:27

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will meet Front Line Defenders to discuss the organisation’s work with a particular focus on their work in Afghanistan at a meeting in Leinster House, Committee Room 2, tomorrow at 12.30pm.

Front Line Defenders, Executive Director Andrew Anderson; Front Line Defenders, Memorial Project Coordinator Michelle Foley and Afghanistan Human Rights Defender Hassan Ali Faiz will meet in person with the Committee.

Committee Cathaoirleach Charlie Flanagan TD said: “Front Line Defenders was founded in Dublin twenty years ago. It was set up with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders at risk (HRDs); those people who are working, non-violently, for any or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“It has won numerous awards including a prestigious UN Prize in the field of Human Rights. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss the work of Front Line Defenders internationally and in particular their current work in Afghanistan and impact of current situation there on the ability of women human rights defenders and HRDS to carry out their work.”
