Sub-Committee on Mental Health to meet representatives of Samaritans Ireland

4 DFómh 2021, 14:22

The Sub-Committee on Mental Health will meet representatives of Samaritans Ireland tomorrow, Tuesday, 5 October in Leinster House, Committee Room 1 at 11am.

The meeting will focus on access of continuity of treatment for those in need of mental health services and the impact of Covid-19 on demand and delivery of services.

Samaritans Ireland Executive Director Niall Mulligan, Communication and Policy Manager Sarah Stack and Volunteer & Regional Director Rory Fitzgerald will appear before the Committee.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Senator Frances Black said: “Samaritans Ireland has 21 branches nationwide and more than 2,000 active volunteers. It offers a 24-hour helpline and answers more than half a million calls and e-mails a year.

“It is well positioned to have an in-depth insight into treatment demand and access for people who need mental health services. The organisation also knows the impact Covid-19 and public health restrictions have had on mental health and the legacy it has left behind as restrictions are eased and people face into a new-normal. The Sub-Committee welcomes this opportunity to hear from Samaritans Ireland and hear its views on the demand and access to mental health services in particular the impact the pandemic has had on service delivery.”
