The Joint Committee on Justice to resume Pre-legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the Sale of Alcohol Bill 2022

31 Ean 2023, 09:16

The Joint Committee on Justice will meet today, Tuesday 31st January 2023 to continue Pre-legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the Sale of Bill 2022.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House at 3pm.

The Committee will hear from representatives from:

  • Alcohol Action Ireland
  • Institute of Public Health
  • Mandate Trade Union
  • National Transport Authority
  • Irish Community Action on Alcohol Network
  • Officials from the Department of Justice

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy James Lawless TD said “The Committee will continue its Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the Sale of Alcohol Bill 2022 today.

Last week saw a very informative meeting with those stakeholders involved in the provision and settings of the sale of alcohol. Today’s meeting with Alcohol Action, Mandate, the NTA and the Irish Community Action on Alcohol Network will allow our Committee to hear from those sectors impacted from the sale of alcohol.

The Sale of Alcohol Bill represents an effort to strike a balance between maintaining the current approach to licensing the sale of alcohol, whilst simultaneously supporting the night-time culture and the wider economy around hospitality.

The Joint Committee on Justice’s aim is to ensure that the Irish licensing system meets the needs of modern society and brings Irish night-time culture into step with modern European cities.”

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
