Good Friday Committee to hear from former minister Liz O’Donnell

15 Feabh 2023, 19:22

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet on Thursday February 16th to continue its series of engagements with architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

Former Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Progressive Democrats TD Liz O’Donnell will address the meeting.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30 - 16:30.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “We look forward to continuing our series of meetings with architects of the Good Friday Agreement with Liz O’Donnell ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Agreement.”

“Ms O’Donnell was a junior minister for foreign affairs at the time of the negotiations representing the Irish Government. Along with the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition which was made up of civil society figures, she was one of the few women involved directly in the talks leading up to the Agreement.”

“It is important that we highlight their work as women are often under-represented in the political sphere and in peace negotiations.”

The Committee has already heard from Bertie Ahern, John Major, John Bruton, George Mitchell, Mark Durkan, Lord Alderdice, Jonathan Powell, Martin Mansergh and Tim O’Connor.

It will continue to meet with a range of people involved in the negotiations, including the politicians involved, diplomats and civil servants in the coming term.
