The Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer has planted a tree on Leinster Lawn today, Thursday 23rd March 2023, to commemorate those who lost their lives to Covid-19 in the State.

This solemn event of remembrance was an opportunity to mark our resilience throughout the pandemic. The tree will be an ongoing symbol of remembrance and a symbol of hope in Leinster House.

Speaking at the event, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann Senator Jerry Buttimer said “We plant this tree in remembrance of the people who lost their lives during the pandemic. In Irish mythology, trees represented wisdom, truth and courage while the cherry tree specifically represents the beauty and fragility of life. I hope this tree gives comfort, joy and hope to all who pass it by. Our thoughts remain with those families and friends who have lost loved ones to Covid-19.”
