19 Aib 2023, 16:02

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement meet on Thursday April 20th to discuss pensions and social security.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30-16:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

Dr. Ciara Fitzpatrick - Lecturer, School of Law, Ulster University

Dr. Tom Boland - Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology & Criminology, University College Cork

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “Due to the political instability in Northern Ireland, its pension and social security system is sometimes overlooked.”

“We welcome the opportunity to hear from Dr Fitzpatrick and Dr Boland on this issue as they are involved in a new group called the All-Island Social Security Network (AISSN) which brings together a group of academics who are researching the social security system on both sides of the Border.”

“The group will also look at what opportunities exist to build a new welfare system if there is a new Ireland.”
