Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts to address Seanad Éireann

23 Meith 2023, 10:00

Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts will address Seanad Éireann on Tuesday, 27 June at 3pm.

Maura Healey was elected the 73rd Governor of Massachusetts in November 2022, making her the United States' first openly gay Governor. She was inaugurated on January 5, 2023.

It follows an invitation by the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer.

Governor Healey’s paternal grandparents were from Kilgarvan in Co. Kerry and Macroom in Co. Cork and her maternal grandmother was a native of Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

Speaking ahead of the address, the Cathaoirleach Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “We are delighted Governor Healey has accepted my invitation to address the Seanad during Pride month."

“Her address also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland and sends a powerful message to young LGBTQI+ people who aspire to public office or indeed any role.”

"It also follows the recent announcement by the Government that historical convictions for consensual sexual activity between men in Ireland are to be disregarded and plans to criminalise the practice of conversion therapy.”

“As the first openly lesbian Governor of Massachusetts, her address is a timely opportunity to build on the strong bonds that have always marked the relationship between our two nations – and both Massachusetts and Ireland which have strong historical connections. While great strides have been made in securing LGBTQI+ rights, we must also address the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQI+ communities in Ireland and the United States.”
