On the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy addressing the Houses of the Oireachtas Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer will host a breakfast in Leinster House.

This event is an opportunity to commemorate not only the historic Address by President John F. Kennedy on the 28th June 1963 but also to celebrate the enduring strength of the connections between Ireland and the United States of America.

Invited guests include H.E. Clare Cronin, Ambassador of the USA to Ireland, Stephen Kennedy Smith, member of the Kennedy family, board member of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association with Seanad Group Leaders and Members of the Irish-USA Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Speaking at the breakfast, Cathaoirleach Jerry Buttimer said: “60 years ago President Kennedy became the first foreign leader to address the Houses of the Oireachtas. It was one of many firsts for President Kennedy. As the youngest elected president in the history of the United States, he embodied the American spirit of opportunities for all.

In his speech, he highlighted the shared history of Ireland and the United States and spoke of the importance of strengthening and maintaining that relationship. I am delighted that we are looking back sixty years later with a positive report on progress in that area.”

Maxwells will file pictures of the event to newsdesks. Photographs will also be available on the Oireachtas Flickr account.
