Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence to discuss the report of the Commission on the Defence Forces

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will meet on Tuesday, September 26th for engagement with Officials from the Department of Defence to discuss the implementation of the recommendations of the Report of the Commission on the Defence Forces.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 15:15-18:15.

  • Jacqui McCrum, Secretary General of the Department of Defence
    Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy


Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Charlie Flanagan said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the significant and wide-ranging programme of work which is continuous across the Department and the Defence Forces in relation to transformation of our Defence Forces.”

“In July 2022 the Government approved a High Level Action Plan (HLAP) to progress the 130 recommendations contained in the report by the Commission on the Defence Forces and to commit the State to increase of the Defence budget from €1.1 billion to €1.5 billion by 2028.”

“We look forward to receiving an update on the implementation of the recommendations to date and how the Department is working alongside the Defence Forces to transform it into a fit for purpose organisation to defend the State and meet the challenges of today and the future.”
