Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to meet for discussion on all aspects of road safety

The meeting will hear from:

• Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman from An Garda Síochána, Roads Policing and Community Engagement
• Superintendent Thomas Murphy from An Garda Síochána, National Roads Policing Bureau
• Chief Executive Officer, Sam Waide, Road Safety Authority (RSA)
• Director of Research, Standards & Assurance, Michael Rowland, Road Safety Authority (RSA)
• Director of Partnerships & External Affairs, Sarah O’Connor, Road Safety Authority (RSA)
• Professor Denis A. Cusack, Director, Medical Bureau of Road Safety

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Gerry Horkan said: “Following a very challenging summer and another tragic weekend on Irish roads our Committee will engage directly with An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and the Medical Bureau of Road Safety to get as much detail as possible on why road accidents are happening and where progress can be made in addressing the tragic increase in road fatalities that have been witnessed this year. Enforcement is a key area that needs to be enhanced, along with driver education and the use of technology to reduce road deaths and injuries.

We will look to all three stakeholders to confirm that all efforts to eliminate such tragedies that persist on our roads nationally are being addressed as a matter of urgency.”

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications  has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
