Joint Committee on Assisted Dying to discuss Assisted Dying and Ethics of Autonomy

The meeting in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from representatives of Dignity in Dying, the Pro Life Campaign and Humanists UK.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said: “In philosophy, autonomy is defined as the capacity of a person to act in accordance with objective morality to make informed decisions, rather than under the influence of external pressure or coercion. The moral and ethical arguments around such decision making, particularly regarding a topic as contentious and divisive as assisted dying, are complex and required detailed examination and debate. The Committee looks forward to discussing this issue and related matters with our stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying  has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
