Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to meet for discussion on all aspects of road safety

The meeting will hear from the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers TD.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Gerry Horkan said: “Tomorrow follows on from our very informative meeting last month with An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and the Medical Bureau of Road Safety on all aspects of road safety.

2023 is proving to be a very challenging year again with over 150 people already dying on our roads. Our Committee welcomes the focus given by Government to road safety in this week’s ‘Be Winter Ready’ campaign announcement.

The Committee will continue to engage directly with the Minister, the Minister of State and Department of Transport to get as much detail as possible on why road accidents are continuing to occur at such increased frequency and where progress can be made in addressing these accidents and unfortunate fatalities.

We re-emphasise that enforcement is a key area that needs to be enhanced, along with driver education and the use of technology to reduce road deaths and injuries.

We look forward to our engagement for Minister of State Chambers to confirm that all efforts to eliminate such tragedies that persist on our roads nationally are being addressed as a matter of urgency within the Department of Transport in tandem with An Garda Síochána.”

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications  has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
