6 Samh 2023, 17:23

The Joint Committee on Justice chaired by Deputy James Lawless will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 7th November 2023 for engagement on Policing Matters with Garda Commissioner, Commissioner Drew Harris and the Minister for Justice, Ms Helen McEntee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 4pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy James Lawless TD said “This meeting tomorrow follows our very productive and informative engagement that we had with the Garda Representative Association, Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors and the Restaurants Association of Ireland 2 weeks ago on policing matters.

Our Committee is very aware of the impact that crime continues to have on society in Ireland. Tomorrow’s meeting presents an opportunity from both the Commissioner and the Minister to outline high-level and policy plans aimed at addressing the issues raised. The  intention of the meeting is to focus on the challenges related to recruitment and retention; rostering and general morale within the force. Policing Dublin City and the perceived increase in street crime.

We will look to get important insights from the Minister and Garda Commissioner in order for our Committee to able to bring tangible recommendations on policing in Ireland to the Department.”

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
