European Union Affairs Committee to discuss upcoming European elections 2024 and combatting disinformation with representatives from European Movement Ireland and DCU

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday February 21st for a discussion on upcoming European elections 2024, voting rights and combatting disinformation.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 10:00-12:30.

 

 

The following representatives are due to appear:

Dr Eileen Culloty, Deputy Director of DCU Institute of Future Media, Democracy and Society, and Media Literacy Ireland

Noelle O'Connell, CEO, European Movement Ireland

Lorna Hayes, DCEO Policy and Research, European Movement Ireland

Rory Harte, Head of Strategy, European Movement Ireland

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Colm Brophy said: “It is internationally accepted that disinformation and manipulative online behaviour poses a potential threat to electoral integrity."

"We must ensure that voters are well informed about how to exercise their democratic vote and what steps are being taken to safeguard voters against misinformation ahead of the elections taking place in May. We look forward to hearing the view of representatives on this issue.”
