Joint Committee on Disability Matters to discuss local transport with National Transport Authority (NTA) and Iarnród Éireann

17 Aib 2024, 12:41

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet today Wednesday, April 17th, to discuss the UNCRPD (United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) on transport at a local level.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 5:30- 8:30 pm.

Representatives from National Transport Authority (NTA) - Chief Executive Officer Anne Graham, Director of Public Transport Services Jeremy Ryan and Director of Transport Regulation Wendy Thompson and representatives from Iarnród Éireann - Head of Corporate Communications Barry Kenny, Director Railway Undertaking Billy Gilpin and Head of Customer Experience Ronan Murphy - will appear at the meeting.

Chairperson of the committee, Deputy Michael Moynihan, said:

“We welcome the opportunity to hear from NTA and Iarnród Éireann on transport on a local level, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)."

“The UNCRPD applies a rights-based definition of disability which posits that it is the interaction of an impairment with barriers in society that causes a disability."

"The NTA advises their commitment to ensuring that the public transport services that are contracted directly and regulated on behalf of the government, are fully accessible. However, parts of our public transport infrastructure date back many decades, the NTA and Iarnród Éireann will address legacy elements of the existing system that were not designed with accessibility in mind."

“We look forward to hearing how progress is being implemented and the current gaps within the system.”
