Joint Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth meets to discuss Ireland’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child & the emerging issues for children

The Joint Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 23rd April in Committee Room 4 at 3pm for a discussion on the views of Children on Ireland’s international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the emerging issues for children in Ireland including AI.

The meeting will hear from:

Representatives from the Youth Advisory Panel to the Ombudsman for Children - Ailis Malone, Alicia Kellet, Bel Nabulele, Ciaran Smith, Esther Tamardoe, Faith Langdon, Luke Fagan, Mia Harding, Princess Ogumefu, Rachel Fleming, Sienna Shackleton, Sinead Murray Toby Murphy, Karolina Byrne.

Representatives from the Ombudsman for Children – Dr. Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman, Ms Aoife McNamara, Acting Head of Participation and Rights Education, Ms Aoife Carragher, Head of Communications. Ms Alice Kiernan, Communications and Social Media Officer, Ms Chinwe Kelly, Administrative Officer, Mr Thomas Olver, Participation and Rights Education Officer.

 

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kathleen Funchion TD said “Tomorrow’s engagement on Ireland’s international obligations under the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child comes after our Committee’s very recent and informative meetings on the use of Artificial Intelligence with bodies including UCC, Cybersafe Kids, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection and Coimisiún na Meán and a number of social media platforms on the safety measures currently in place for children using technology.

“At the meeting tomorrow we will welcome the first hand views of the representatives from both the Youth Advisory Panel to the Ombudsman for Children and the Office of the  Ombudsman for Children on how they feel Ireland’s plans and actions regarding the UN Convention can be strengthened, enhanced and improved in order to continue the ultimate aims of protecting our young people in tandem with providing opportunities for them to achieve their potentials.”
